"A different day. Even if the experiment of Biblical time
supported the argument that it is the abuse of light wines and beer, not
through use, which is reprehensible, we must remember that we are dealing with a
modern problem. In the time of Jesus in Palestine filth that is not disposed of
through modern and sewerage systems was tossed from the windows into the street.
Shallow wells spread disease, and water was considered possibly dangerous, as it
to-day in some countries where similar social conditions exist. It may be that
to run the risk of typhoid by drinking water contaminated by
filth; but to-day in America pure water may be had in
abundance."

Prohibition's Failure
On December 5th, 1933 the "The Noble Experiment" came to an end. Millions of people were affected in the United States, and another couple thousand died in the process. The 18th amendment was repealed with the 21st, and the purpose for the Volstead Act and other laws that supported prohibition were no -longer mandatory. The whole thing turned out to be a mess. Enforcement of 1920's Prohibition was a nightmare; criminal elements saw huge profits in bootlegging. Law enforcement in general was viewed unfavorably by much of the population and organized crime organizations were thought to have many police officials on their payroll.
