Prohibition Creates Criminals
When the 18th amendment banned alcohol in the U.S. a new criminal rate rose. Many men saw the prohibition of alcohol as an oppurtunity to make more money off of alcohol. These people were called bootleggers.
Bootleggers
For the most part bootleggers were smugglers, people who were trying to earn an honest living doing illegal things. Bootleggers were people whom provided alcohol to people through any means necessary. Although it was illegal and immoral for people to do such a job, many did not think much of it since it had just recently become illegal.
Bootleggers had many different jobs, some transported, produced it, dealt, etc. It is what we now call organized crime. The illegal sales of alcoholic beverages was a big business. People were thirsty, Bootleggers were there to fill the need.
